Why Strength Comes Before Conditioning

Most athletes who walk into the facility tell us the same thing: they want to be fitter. They gas out in round three, or their legs go in the last quarter, and the obvious conclusion is that they need more conditioning. Nine times out of ten, that is the wrong first move.

Strength is the base everything sits on

A stronger athlete uses a smaller percentage of their maximum on every single effort. The same takedown, the same scrum, the same sprint costs them less. Raise the ceiling and the work that used to feel like an all out effort becomes submaximal. That is conditioning you did not have to run for.

You cannot condition a quality you do not have yet.

What this looks like in practice

For a fighter eight weeks out, we are not stripping conditioning away. We are changing the order of priorities:

The part nobody posts about

Progress here is unglamorous. It is the same four or five lifts, done properly, for months, with the load creeping up. It does not make good content. It makes good athletes.

If you are training around a niggle that never fully clears, or you have plateaued despite doing more work than ever, the answer is usually not another finisher. Book a consult and we will look at it properly.
